    Description

Handmade Framed Wooden “SKIPJACK" Half Model
by Fred L. Miller, Ships Carpenter, Annapolis ~
    Circa 1972 ~ (26.5" x 21.5")
This is a wonderful rare framed half model of a SkipJack on a burlap background that would look great hanging in an office or home with nautical decor.
It is handmade by Fred L. Miller and is nearly 50 years old.
"Since the time settlers added sails to the log canoe, the Chesapeake Bay has been famous for sailing craft. Foremost of these craft was the Baltimore or Flying Clipper ship, who traded with the world. Gaining a reputation for swift seaworthy craft, Privateer and Slaver ships were seen being constructed in the Baltimore style. One could vision schooners, Clipper schooners or the giant four masted Lumber Schooners headed for markets in the Baltimore or Norfolk area. When the need for more sailing power was needed in the oyster industry, the Bugeye was to come in view to pull the heavy iron dredge. Almost nowhere in America today other than th4e Bay Country can we see watermen earning their living under the power of sail. That sail power is the lofty Chesapeake Bay Skip Jack. Bay countrymen still produce and use the sleek little log canoes which are enjoyable to both race or just plain view." -
