Description
For sale: Hand made model of a Great Lakes freighter or ore shipFEATURES:
Appears to be made of hard woods, with steel keel, painted metal part, chains, wires.
Very creative use of parts that would have been readily available for home use.
The steel keel would provide stability as a
pond boat, but it's very heavy.
The ship weighs about 9.2 lbs. With the painted black wood base, both weigh about 10.3 lbs.
Fun, detailed work includes hand-made ladder, hatches, side rails with wire safety supports, lifeboats, smoke stacks, rudder, etc.
I suspect this was built by a seaman or sea-woman familiar with Great Lakes construction.
Sorry, I've no idea who Frank Seither was, nor does he show up in the US Great Lakes ships records.
Perhaps it was the name of the model boat builder?
SIZES:
All are approximate:
Length: 22-1/2
Width: 4"
Height with base: 13-1/2"
Height without base - ship only: 11" keel to tallest mast
FLAWS:
There are many flaws, which made this really wonderful.
Some paint has rubbed or flaked off.
The keel has been hammered and scraped - suggesting usage, perhaps as a pond boat?
Some paint has crackles - really cool looking and authentic
The hand lettering is uneven
SHIPPING:
I will pack this very carefully to prevent damage, which is why the box is so large.
And, it's a heavy model.
